James what are your thoughts on Jeff Lebby? You’ve been pretty quiet on the matter.

Mississippi State Coaching Search Heats Up Following Court Ruling
Rob Stock-- Bulldogs Report

Mississippi State is ramping up the search for their new head coach following a ruling made on the lawsuit brought by Jeff Lebby. The lawsuit sought to allow Lebby to remain the head coach until all legal issues were resolved but was dismissed with prejudice due to the judge finding the language in Lebby’s contract to be unambiguous and violated willingly by Lebby. This ruling should alleviate any hesitations that any potential coaches might have regarding accepting the role.

Mississippi State officials after the ruling noted that their coaching search was now shifting into full throttle and that they were looking to make sure the program would be in good hands for the foreseeable future. The administration noted the impact Mike Leach had at the University despite his short tenure there and reaffirmed that was the mold in which they wanted the program to follow.

“We want to restore the legacy that Mike Leach had started to build at this University”, said one of the officials in a press conference. However, finding a coaching hire at the moment that fits that desire isn’t the easiest. Below is a breakdown of each of the coaches the university is rumored to be targeting at the moment.

Dan Mullen
This is the “right the ship” option if you just look at it on the surface. Mullen was a highly successful coach at Mississippi State and both parties would be satisfied with it at the current moment. However, life isn’t always as it seems. Mullen left the Bulldogs for a step up in job but it was inside the conference, which many might see as a betrayal.

Mullen is currently the head coach at UNLV after spending 4 years out of a job after getting fired by Florida. He hasn’t even started his first season at UNLV but there is still a chance the Bulldogs could lure him back and get a familiar face to try to steady the ship. One other downside is that he isn’t a true disciple of the air raid like Mike Leach. However, we all remember the good years, maybe they can come back.

Kliff Kingsbury
This would be the “perfect fit” for the Bulldogs in the opinion of many. Kingsbury is a true Leach disciple, playing for him at Texas Tech and winning the Sammy Baugh trophy in 2002. He recently has spent time at USC as an offensive analyst and helped coach Caleb Williams to a Heisman trophy. Kingsbury is the current offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.

Kingsbury would be a great hire for the Bulldogs. He knows how to work with and develop a quarterback which is important in the modern game. It would also entice those quarterbacks to join him with his experience in developing quarterbacks and coaching in the NFL.

Joe Brady
The “dream hire” for the Bulldogs but also the least likely to happen. Joe Brady was the passing game coordinator in the 2019 LSU offense that absolutely destroyed everyone else. Currently he is the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills and runs the “everybody eats” offense that is prolific there.

This would be a dream to bring that prolific offense to Starksville. However, it’s probably the least likely to happen out of all the options listed. It would require a large contract and some motivation but a SEC head coaching job would look good on any resume.

All in all, I think if the Bulldogs get any of these options they will have someone who can help the program move forward and restore some of the trust of the fans after the Lebby embarrassment. The biggest thing is they need to move quickly and get someone otherwise they fall further and further behind the other teams in the conference and the SEC is not a forgiving conference.
