Cornell Jennings & Defense Continue To Pave the Way For Coastal

As one follower would say, run the dang ball. Coastal did just that after Meredith once again struggled, with Jennings churning out 182 yards and five tuddies in the win.

Conway, SC. - The formula remains the same, and it keeps working.
For the 21st straight time, Coastal Carolina walked off the field a winner, this time behind another second-half surge and a career day from star running back Cordell Jennings. The Chanticleers rolled to a 42–14 win over No. 14 Louisville, improving to 6–0 and extending their unbeaten streak to 22 games.

Early on, though, it didn’t look easy. Louisville managed just 122 yards of offense all afternoon, but Coastal’s own mistakes, including three interceptions from quarterback Fredrick Meredith, kept things close. The Cardinals opened with a field goal after a long kick return, then capitalized on another Meredith misfire late in the half to make it 14–6 at the break despite being thoroughly outgained.

The second half opened with more of the same with another Meredith interception that Louisville quickly turned into a game-tying touchdown run and two-point conversion. From there, Coastal simply flipped the switch.

Jennings powered in three straight scores, finishing with five touchdowns on the day, while Meredith finally settled down to hit Tavares Tinker for a deep touchdown that blew the game open.

Defensively, Alfonso Smith and the “Teal Wall” made life miserable for Louisville quarterback C.J. Priester, forcing three interceptions, one fumble, and piling up eight sacks. Smith’s 3.5 sacks gave him 18 on the season and pushed him past the program’s all-time record with 32 career sacks ; a milestone the senior didn’t downplay.

“There’s been some ferocious pass rushers to come through here,” Smith said, grinning. “But I’m ready to take this record and put it in the stratosphere.”

Head coach Kade Vaughn kept quarterback Meredith away from postgame interviews, but defended his veteran signal-caller when pressed about his struggles.

“Fred’s led this team to a 36–1 record the last two and a half years,” Vaughn said. “He’s earned the right to figure out what’s going on. That’s all I’m going to say on Meredith.”

Coastal’s defensive front continues to look championship-caliber, but the question remains whether Meredith, who now has 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions on the year, can steady the offense for the stretch run.

The Chanticleers return home next week to face Georgia Tech (2–3) as Smith continues his assault on the record books and Coastal eyes a 7–0 start.

Image
At some point, someone has to start doubling Smith, right? The senior DE tallied his sixth straight game with multiple sacks as he increased his season total to 18.

Image
Meredith continues to look like a shell of the QB that lead the Chanticleers to a 30-1 record over the last three years, with three more interceptions pushing his season total to 8 already.

Image
With Louisville chirping after tying the game early in the 3rd, Coastal's Teal Wall silenced the noise and only allowed 30 more yards through the contest.

Tech Becomes Latest Victim In Chanticleers Mauling

Image
From the opening kick, the Chanticleers made life difficult for the visiting Yellow Jackets. Coastal forced a fumble on the opening kickoff, that would be recovered for a safety, for one of seven lost fumbles by Tech in the disastrous outing.

Conway, SC. - Another Saturday, another Coastal Carolina blowout and another round of questions about how Kade Vaughn handles them.

The No. 1 Chanticleers throttled Georgia Tech 79–6 to improve to 7–0, but the story wasn’t about the Teal Wall’s 13 sacks, Alfonso Smith's record chasing sack numbers, Cornell Jennings’ 239 rushing yards, or even Fredrick Meredith’s rebound performance. Instead, attention again turned to Vaughn’s sideline choices — and his words afterward.

With Coastal’s starters still on the field deep into the fourth quarter against the Yellow Jackets’ backups, the Chanticleers tacked on a long touchdown pass to Tavares Tinker before kneeling out the final minutes. Asked postgame if he was running up the score, Vaughn smirked.

“Did you not see us run three consecutive kneel downs inside the five?” he said. “Could’ve added another one.”

Georgia Tech head coach Jedd Fisch skipped the traditional postgame handshake, prompting Vaughn to chase him down near the tunnel.

“I told him I hoped he had a great trip to Conway,” Vaughn said later. “And that next time, he should bring his football team, not the practice squad.”

For all the noise, the numbers again spoke loudly for Coastal’s defense. The Yellow Jackets fumbled seven times, surrendered 13 sacks, and gave up 23 points to the Chanticleers’ defense and special teams.

Senior defensive end Alfonso Smith continued his historic campaign with three more sacks, bringing his total to 21 on the year and 35 for his career; both new program and ACC records. He now sits just two sacks shy of Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. for the conference single-season mark and within striking distance of Terrell Suggs’ NCAA record of 24.

“I’ve been building toward this since the day I got here,” said Smith, who transferred from UCLA after his redshirt freshman season. “Now I’m ready to finish it.”

Jennings, meanwhile, kept his Heisman campaign rolling, eclipsing 1,000 yards for the season with another four-touchdown performance. Meredith added two touchdown strikes to Tinker but again showed uneven rhythm, missing several open throws and tossing another interception.

Coastal has now won 23 straight games, the nation’s longest active streak. But as the Chanticleers prepare to host Wake Forest next week, even their blowouts have become talking points and their coach seems to prefer it that way.

Sacks and fumbles were the story of the game as Tech struggled to maintain any rhythm with all of the negative plays.
