Delaware tramples Kennesaw State to win CUSA Championship

Newark, Delaware – Two years ago, the Delaware Blue Hens were an upstart FCS powerhouse hoping to find their place in the crowded world of major college football.

Now? They’re champions.

In front of a raucous home crowd at The Tub, the No. 12 Blue Hens (13-0) delivered a dominant performance in the Conference USA Championship Game, dismantling Kennesaw State 49–7 to secure their first FBS conference title and cap a perfect regular season in only their second year since making the leap.

Quarterback Mason Kelsay was picked off early but then orchestrated a 12-play, 83-yard touchdown drive on Delaware’s second possession and never looked back. The senior dual-threat finished with 234 passing yards and five total touchdowns, calmly guiding an offense that continues to click at the right time. Kelsay would throw a season high four interceptions in the game, one of which was on a tipped the ball and another coming on a heave on the last play of the first half.

“This group is special,” offensive coordinator Coach Porter said. “They’ve been unselfish, they’ve worked like madmen, and they’ve executed with toughness. To go from FCS to this in two years, undefeated and holding that trophy, just speaks to their belief.”

Running backs Darrion Dupree and Luke Brown combined for 137 rushing yards and 2 scores, while Thomas Amankwaa led the receiving corps with 11 catches for 112 yards. The Blue Hens outgained the Owls 449–109 in total offense and held Kennesaw State to just one yard per rush attempt.

Delaware’s defense was relentless, allowing Kennesaw State to pick up just three first downs in the game and harassing the Owls quarterbacks forcing them to go a combined 7 for 22 passing.

Quarterback Skyler Williams was benched after a pair of early misfires, and backup Andre Odom’s lone touchdown pass came in garbage time.

Delaware’s rise has been one of the sport’s most remarkable stories. After finishing 11-3 in their inaugural FBS campaign last year, the Blue Hens surged in 2026 behind a fast, physical defense and a creative, balanced offense under Coach Porter’s direction. Their 13–0 record includes road wins over Virginia, Vanderbilt, and Middle Tennessee, and a signature home victory over Rutgers.

Most impressively, they allowed just 13.1 points per game this season, best in the nation, while scoring 32.5 per contest.

“We wanted to show we belong at this level,” said Kelsay, who has accounted for 33 total touchdowns this season. “We didn’t just want to be a good team. We wanted to be a great team. And now we’ve got a trophy to prove it.”

Delaware’s undefeated season may just be enough for a CFP invite, where they will likely face a tough power five opponent.

Regardless of the matchup and the result, the Blue Hens have already made history, and the college football world is officially on notice.

“This isn’t the end,” Porter said. “It’s just the start of something even bigger.”

Conference Champions | In just their second year at the FBS level, the Delaware Blue Hens completed a dream season, a perfect 13–0 campaign capped by a 49–7 demolition of Kennesaw State in the Conference USA Championship. The win secures Delaware’s first-ever FBS conference title and hopefully a playoff berth.
QB Mason Kelsay | The freshman sensation delivered another statement performance, accounting for five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) while throwing for 258 yards. Kelsay’s poise, athleticism, and leadership have transformed Delaware’s offense into one of the most efficient units in the Group of Five.
RB Darrion Dupree | Dupree was once again the steady force behind Delaware’s balanced attack, rushing for 87 yards and two scores on 21 carries. His consistency in short-yardage and red zone situations helped Delaware go 7-for-7 on scoring trips inside the 20.
WR Corps | Senior Thomas Amankwaa led the charge with 11 catches for 112 yards, while Riley Williams and Yannick Smith combined for three touchdowns. The Hens spread the ball around to seven different receivers, showcasing their depth and precision.
Dominant Defense | Delaware’s defense put on a clinic, forcing interceptions, notching sacks, and holding Kennesaw State to just 109 total yards. Collins Acheampong was unstoppable off the edge with two sacks, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble, while KT Seay added a key interception. The unit has allowed only 13.1 points per game this season.
