Chapter V: Nightmare Of A Distant Dreamer
Two months since Dom's release from prison has passed. Layla had no awareness of Dom being back on the streets as she kept herself busy with work and giving herself to her boyfriend, Dale. When Dale had agreed to meet up with Layla at her place after the game against Memphis. As Layla prepared herself for a night with Dale, there was a knock on her door. Layla blissfully charmed herself thinking Dale couldn't wait to rush over. "Damn Dale, you got here mighty fast! You couldn't—"
Layla froze mid sentence as she opened the door, revealing it wasn't Dale, but Dom.
Layla's heart leapt into her throat as she stared wide-eyed at the figure standing before her. The dark eyes that used to hold such passion and intensity now seemed to bore into her very soul, making her shiver. "Dom..." she whispered, hardly believing it was truly him. Her grip tightened on the door handle as memories flooded back unbidden - heated moments interspersed with gut-wrenching pain and fear. A war raged inside her chest, between the lingering traces of love for the charming devil he used to be, and the scars left by the cruel monster he became. "How...how did you find me?" Her voice trembled slightly, betraying the unease churning in her belly.
Dom drank in the delicious sight of Layla standing before him, his hungry gaze raking over her curves appraisingly. The shock and uncertainty in her eyes sent a dark thrill racing down his spine. He flashed a wicked grin, taking a step closer to invade her personal space. "Didn't think I'd let my favorite little porn star slip away so easily, didja baby?" His voice was low and smooth as silk, dripping with false charm. "Had to pull a few strings, call in some favors, but here I am - home sweet home." Dom reached out boldly to brush a strand of hair behind Layla's ear, his fingertips grazing her cheek. He could practically smell her nervousness, see her pulse fluttering wildly at the base of her throat. "Don't you dare pretend you're not happy to see me, Lay. I know I've been away a while, but I'm back now...and I—"
Layla recoiled as if burnt by Dom's touch, jerking her head away sharply.
She quickly shifted to block his entrance, leaving only a sliver of space as she half-hid behind the door, her body language defensive and wary. "I'm not your 'baby'," Layla snapped, her voice regaining some of its previous steeliness even as it wavered. She folded her arms tightly across her chest, inadvertently shielding herself. "And I have no idea what you mean, 'home sweet home'. That chapter of my life is closed, Dom. I've moved on."
Despite her bravado, Layla could feel her resolve weakening under the force of Dom's penetrating stare. The past they shared threatened to overwhelm her, drowning out the present. She bit her lip hard, using the small pain to anchor herself. "What do you want, Dom? Why are you here after all this time?"
Dom's grin faltered for a brief moment at Layla's harsh rejection and defensive stance, but it quickly morphed into an amused smirk. He could see the hesitation in her eyes, hear the tremor in her voice. She wasn't nearly as unaffected as she pretended to be. Leaning casually against the doorframe, he shrugged nonchalantly.
"Want? Well, ain't that obvious, sweetheart? I want you."
His gaze raked boldly down her body, undressing her with his eyes. "Always have, always will. No amount of time or distance is gonna change that." Dom's tongue darted out to wet his lips, a predatory gesture. "As for why I'm here, well, let's just say I couldn't stay away any longer."
Layla maintained her composure, unfazed by Dom's slick words and heated gaze. She stood her ground firmly, her voice unwavering as she cut through his attempts at charm and manipulation. "I'm sorry, but I'm not buying what you're selling anymore, Dom. Those lines may have worked on the naive girl I used to be, but I've grown up since then. I've moved on with my life and my career, and I don't appreciate you barging back in like this." Her tone grew sharper, more insistent. "Now, I think it's best for both of us if you leave. My boyfriend will be here any minute, and I won't hesitate to call the cops if this turns into something ugly."
Dom's eyes flashed dangerously at Layla's mention of another man, a surge of jealous rage coursing through his veins. But he tamped it down ruthlessly, refusing to show his hand too soon. Instead, he adopted an almost mocking tone, his lips twisting into a sneer. "Boyfriend, huh? Good luck with that, princess. Men like him don't stick around forever, especially when they find out what a dirty little slut you really are underneath all this prim and proper bullshit." He leaned forward, lowering his voice to a menacing growl as he reminded her of the power he held over her. "And don't pretend you can brush off the debt so easily, Layla. You owe me for everything - your looks, your talent, that tight little cunt that made me millions. You wouldn't even HAVE a career if it weren't for me."
Layla's cheeks flushed with anger and disgust, her hands balling into fists at her sides as venom dripped from every word.
"Don't you dare presume to own me, you manipulating bastard! You think you can just waltz back into my life after the hell you put me through? The bruises, the tears, the shattered pieces of myself I had to pick up because of you?" Her voice rose, shaking with barely contained fury. "I was a child, a scared, naive child when you took advantage of my innocence! You molded me into your perfect little puppet, parading me around for your sick amusement and greed! Well, guess what? That Layla died the day I clawed my way out of that toxic nightmare!" Sobs threatened to choke her, but Layla swallowed them down, her glare blazing like hot coals."I. Do. Not. Belong. To. Anyone! Especially the likes of you, mother fucker!"
Dom laughed off Layla's tirade, a cold, mirthless sound devoid of humor. He brushed off her accusations with a dismissive wave, his eyes glinting with cruel amusement. He stepped closer, looming over her, his tall frame dwarfing her smaller one. "Aw, listen to you, getting all worked up and dramatic like the little actress you are. You're right, I did mold you, sculpted you into the perfect fucktoy. And I'd do it all again in a heartbeat."
Dom grabbed Layla's chin roughly, forcing her to meet his icy gaze.
"Face it, babygirl, you'll always be mine, no matter how far you run or hide. Your body remembers, your soul remembers. This is just a little bout of denial, but we both know you'll come crawling back to Daddy eventually."
With a surge of adrenaline-fueled strength, Layla wrenched her face out of Dom's punishing grip, her cheek stinging from the rough contact. Acting on pure instinct, she slammed the door with all her might, praying that the flimsy barrier would keep him out. However, her desperate attempt to secure safety was thwarted when Dom's foot shot out lightning-quick, wedging itself firmly between the door and its frame. Layla strained with all her weight, muscles burning from exertion, but it was no use against Dom's sheer physicality.
"Stop! Get away from me!" Layla screamed, hoping to draw the attention of neighbors, of Dale, of anyone who could save her from reliving the nightmare that was her past with Dom. Tears of fear and rage blurred her vision, but she refused to abandon her efforts to barricade herself against the looming threat.
Dom roughly shouldered open the door, sending Layla staggering backwards. The hinges creaked in protest at the abuse before giving way completely, allowing him unhindered access to the apartment. In an instant, he was on her, one large hand wrapping around her slender throat, pinning her against the wall. Dom's breath came heavy and ragged, his eyes wild with a mix of lust and aggression.
He squeezed lightly, relishing the way her delicate pulse fluttered frantically against his palm.
"Shut UP!" he roared, spittle flying from his mouth to splatter across her face. "I've been more than patient with your bullshit, Layla. You're MINE bitch, and you WILL remember your place!"
Dom's free hand fisted in her hair, yanking her head back brutally to bare the slender column of her throat to his greedy mouth. He attacked the sensitive flesh with biting kisses. Layla's scream caught in her throat as Dom's hand clamped down on her windpipe, cutting off her air supply. Panic surged through her veins as she clawed desperately at his iron grasp, her nails digging into his skin. Stars began to dance at the edges of her vision, but Layla refused to black out, refused to surrender to him again. With a burst of desperate strength, she brought her knee up hard and fast, ramming it into Dom's groin. He hunched over, clutching himself and letting out a guttural groan of pain and anger. The move was crude but effective, causing him to loosen his grip momentarily. Seizing the chance, Layla ducked under his arm and stumbled away, gasping and choking as she tried to put some much-needed distance between them.
"Get the fuck out, Dom!" she rasped, her voice hoarse from the assault."I'm calling the police!"
The temporary reprieve allowed Layla to scramble away, but Dom's predatory gaze never left her trembling form. Straightening up slowly, Dom advanced on Layla with a dangerous, limping gait. His face twisted into an uglier version of his former handsome features, contorted by rage and obsession.
"Bitch, you've got some nerve!" He snarled through clenched teeth. "Thinking you can get rid of me that easily. I gave you everything, shaped you, owned you, and you DARE to kick me in the balls?"
He lunged suddenly, grabbing her arm in a brutal vise-like grip as he slammed her against the wall again. One hand wrapped around her throat once more, squeezing threateningly.
With a final surge of defiance, Layla spat directly into Dom's eye, the viscous fluid momentarily blurring his vision. Blinking rapidly, he loosened his grip just enough for her to summon the last of her strength and drive a balled fist squarely into his same eye socket. A sickening thud echoed through the room as she felt her knuckles land against his orbital bone. Dom staggered back, both hands flying to his injured face as he howled in pain and outrage. Layla wasted no time, shoving past him and fleeing deeper into her apartment. But her escape was short-lived as Dom, driven mad with rage and humiliation, lunged after her with murderous intent. They crashed into a shelving unit in the narrow hallway, the fragile furniture toppling and spilling its contents as they grappled viciously.
Layla's head cracked against the wall, stars exploding across her field of vision as she crumbled.
Dom's vision swam with crimson fury, Layla's attack igniting a primal, animalistic rage within him. Ignoring the agony radiating from his eye socket, he tore the leather belt from his pants with a vicious growl, doubling it over in his fists. He towered over Layla's crumpled form, drinking in her dazed and helpless state with sadistic satisfaction.
"You filthy fucking WHORE!" he bellowed, his voice raw with enmity. "After everything I've done for you, this is how you repay me?! Hitting me, trying to run from your own goddamn MASTER?!"
Without warning or restraint, Dom lashed out with the improvised whip, the thick strap of leather biting savagely into the exposed skin of Layla in various places.
Layla lay curled on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably as she shielded her face from further blows. Her body ached everywhere Dom's belt had struck, welts rising on her tender skin. The coppery taste of blood filled her mouth where she'd bitten her lip to muffle her screams. Through the haze of pain and terror, she heard Dom's voice, dripping with disdain and ownership.
"Pathetic. Look at you, reduced to a sniveling cunt. You forget, babygirl, your ass still belongs to me. Every inch of you, inside and out, is MINE, bitch!"
He loomed over her, a dark silhouette against the bright hallway lights. Slowly holstered his belt, his breathing heavy with lingering rage and twisted arousal. He looked down at Layla's broken form, a cruel smile playing on his split lips.
"You've got spirit, I'll give you that. It's one of the reasons I love breaking you."
He reached down, roughly gripping her chin and forcing her to look up at him.
"But mark my words, whore. You WILL crawl back to me, begging for my forgiveness and another chance. It's only a matter of time. I give you till the end of the month to remember where your loyalty lies... and settle your debt. Have my money ready, or face the consequences. Don't make me do to you what I did to your brother..."
Releasing her face with a sharp jerk, Dom straightened up and turned on his heel, striding out of the apartment without a backward glance. As Dom left the apartment, he took the staircase down to the front door, exiting the building.
Dale's Uber had finally arrived to Layla's block after the driver took multiple wrong turns despite using a GPS.
Hopping out of the car, fate would have Dom and Dale cross each other's path as they walked by each other unbeknownst.
Dale made his way up to Layla's apartment with flowers and chocolate in tow. Taking the elevator and arriving to her door, Dale sees her door wide open, hearing faint sobs coming from within. Racing through the disturbed apartment, Dale finds Layla laid on the floor, holding her face in tears.
"Hey, Layla, what happened? Are you alright?" Dale unconsciously asked as he kneeled before her. He knew she wasn't but it was the first thing to slip off his tongue. Dale sits her up, holding her in his arms. "What the hell happened here?" He worriedly asked as Layla's constant sobs grew louder.
Layla trembled in Dale's embrace, her tears soaking into his shirt as she clung to him like a lifeline. She couldn't bring herself to speak, the events too raw and humiliating. How could she possibly explain the monsters of her past catching up to her? The flowers and chocolate Dale brought lay forgotten on the floor beside them, mocking the cheerful occasion. Instead, her apartment bore witness to a terrifying altercation, with overturned furniture and a broken woman in its wake. Layla could only shake her head weakly at Dale's question, fresh sobs wracking her battered body. She felt utterly ashamed and defeated, terrified that he would leave once he learned the truth about her sordid past. Her fingers dug into his shirt, silently pleading for him to stay despite the horrifying scene he'd stumbled upon.
"P-please...she whimpered, her voice hoarse and barely audible. "D-don't go." Layla tries to catch her sobs in her throat, but she was too weak as they bolster out of her throat, forming into a deep horrid wail muffled in Dale's shirt as he held her tight for dear life.
Back in Seattle...
As the night grew on. Clarissa silently fixes herself a cup of green tea as the TV light from the living room had danced against the walls, hearing the game analysis talk about Dale's monumental game, tying Cam Ward's record for most career touchdowns. Passing through the living room, Clarissa softly saunters to the sliding door that led to the balcony. Stepping out into the cool breeze, she leans against the rail, spotting Dale's Chevy Blazer RS that he gifted her. It was an everyday reminder to her that she had someone out there that cared for her.
Rising her eyes up to the well lit full moon, she thinks of Dale, as casually as possible, but in her heart, harbored budding feelings, unsaid emotions for him as she thought of how much he was there for her.
As she stared off into the night, taking multiple sips of the hot green tea that washed a warmth over her from the inside, Clarissa couldn't shake this eerie feeling that validated her concern for Dale.
"Dale... I hope you're doing okay... You don't know how much I miss you..."
