The Minnesota Golden Gophers are one of college football’s true originals — a program steeped in tradition, glory, and grit. Founded in 1882, Minnesota quickly became a Midwestern powerhouse, defining the early decades of the sport.

Under legendary coach Bernie Bierman, Minnesota dominated college football. Between 1934 and 1941, the Gophers won five national championships (1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941) and produced a string of All-Americans who became household names in the Twin Cities and beyond. Among them was Bruce Smith, the pride of Faribault, Minnesota, who captured the Heisman Trophy in 1941, becoming the only Gopher ever to win the award. His toughness and leadership embodied the grit of those Depression-era teams.

After World War II, Minnesota slipped from its dynastic heights, facing stiffer competition across the Big Ten. But the Gophers roared back in 1960, winning their sixth national championship and earning back-to-back Rose Bowl appearances (1961, 1962) under coach Murray Warmath.
Players like Sandy Stephens, one of the first Black quarterbacks to lead a major program to a national title, became trailblazers both on and off the field.

The decades that followed were marked by inconsistency. Despite flashes of competitiveness and iconic upsets (especially against Michigan and Wisconsin), the Gophers often found themselves fighting for bowl eligibility rather than Big Ten titles.
Metrodome years brought moments of excitement — stars like Laurence Maroney, Marion Barber III, and Eric Decker kept fans hopeful — but Minnesota couldn’t quite reclaim its old dominance.

The tide began to turn in the 2010s, with coaches like Jerry Kill and later P.J. Fleck instilling toughness and culture. The 2019 season marked a resurgence: an 11–2 record, a New Year’s Day Outback Bowl win over Auburn, and Minnesota’s highest national ranking in over 50 years. The “Row the Boat” mantra became a rallying cry for a proud but hungry fan base.

Now with Fleck leaving, the school is going back to the ground and pound approach of the 1940's Iron Men. Bringing back a legacy name to lead the change..

They always seem like a tough team to beat but not a team that is going to win anything. That needs to change.

:ooo:

Already have a jump start in recruiting with solid pipelines and that B1G conference prestige. Should get plenty of 4/3* prospects the big boys pass up on
