USF KICKS OFF PORTER ERA WITH A WIN
Bulls roll up 442 yards of offense and 49 points

Saturday August 28, 2027 | Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium | DeKalb, Illinois | 12:00 PM

DeKalb, Illinois - The DJ Porter era in Tampa began with a statement. In his first game as head coach, Porter’s South Florida Bulls powered past Northern Illinois 49–21 at Brigham Field, racking up 442 yards of total offense and controlling the game from the second quarter onward.

Quarterback Locklan Hewlett looked poised and efficient in his debut in porter's offense, completing 21 of 24 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. His connection with receivers Tyler Williams, DaWann Troup, and Jordyn Bridgewater kept the Huskies’ secondary guessing, while the Bulls’ ground game did the rest.

Sophomore backs George Shembo and Steven Snead combined for 170 yards and three rushing scores, setting the tone for an offense that averaged 7.9 yards per play. Freshman Nicholas Daniel added a late touchdown to cap the scoring, giving USF a 40-plus point performance to kick off the year.

“It’s a great start,” Porter said after the game. “You can’t ask for much more than coming out, executing, and finishing drives. We’ve still got a lot to clean up, some missed assignments and a few mental lapses, but I’m proud of how our guys competed. The energy on that sideline was special.”

While the offense hummed, new defensive coordinator Tony White saw both the promise and the growing pains of his first outing. The Bulls allowed 405 yards, including 385 through the air, but came up big on key downs, holding NIU to just 1.0 yards per carry and 4-of-9 on third down.

“There were some plays I want back,” White admitted. “But it’s a process. We showed flashes of what this defense can become, the pressure was there, the communication improved, and we forced them into tough situations. I’m proud of the way we battled.”

Cedrick Hawkins and Eric Rance led the charge with a combined 20 tackles, while Ira Singleton made an early statement with two sacks and three tackles for loss.

For Porter, the debut win was about more than numbers, it was about setting a tone for a program under new leadership.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “We want to play fast, play physical, and play for each other. Today was step one.”

USF (1–0) will return home next week for its highly anticipated matchup with Louisville under the lights in Tampa.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 49 – NIU 21
Image

Offense
Locklan Hewlett commanded the offense, completing 21 of 24 passes and looking very comfortable in the new scheme. He got the ball out quickly and made the correct read most times.
Shembo, Snead and Daniel ran wild on the Huskies, racking up 209 yards and four scores on the ground.
Routes were crisp from everyone, no drops.
The offensive line was nearly flawless, keeping Hewlett upright and paving the way for a strong rushing performance.
Defense
USF gave up 385 yards through the air, certainly more than they would have liked. Players are in new positions and learning a new scheme so there are bound to be teething issues.
For as much as the pass defense struggled at times the run defense was the exact opposite. NIU averaged less than one yard per carry and both touchdowns came in short yardage. The line was aggressive and shed blocks efficiently and the linebackers and defensive backs swarmed to the ball carrier.
Special Teams
Nico Gramatica was 7 of 7 on extra points with none of them in question.
Though Dorian McSordy was only called upon once his lone punt was poor, traveling just 24 yards.
Elton York returned one kick for 23 yards and a punt for 13 yards. No drama.
Quotables
"It was a strong first step. I’m proud of how we handled the moment, especially on the road. We’ve got a lot of growing to do, but this was the kind of team effort you build on." - DJ Porter, USF Head Coach.
"I’m never satisfied giving up big plays, but we made stops when we needed to. That’s something we can build confidence from moving forward." - Tony White, USF Defensive Coordinator.
"Coach told us all week to stay calm, trust the system, and play fast. Once we got into rhythm, everything started clicking." - Locklan Hewlett, USF Quarterback.
Injury Notes
A few players missed a handful of snaps throughout the game due to various injuries, no players have been added to the injury report and at the moment they are all available for next week's game.
News
RB Steven Snead has been named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Next Up
USF will host Louisville in Tampa.

are you mixing coverages, or just playing straight up man? I tend to get hit with a lot of chunk plays since I run 85% man, but I'll switch to zone if they're running a West Coast and dink-n-dunking.

Long as you're getting a pass rush you can take the chunk plays, since you'll have as mant negative yourself :yep:

What happened to the QB battle?

I was mixing coverages, more zone than man since I have a couple starting DBs in the mis 70s for MCV. I had one play where one of my safeties bailed on his coverage to double an outside receiver and his man was wide open. I don't think I have seen that before.

I ran all the QBs through a set of plays in practice and there wasn't much separation. My thinking coming into game one was that Hewlett had earned it, likely with a short leash. He didn't do anything that made me want to sub him in. I did get Brantley in for a couple designed runs but nothing earth shattering. I guess I should have addressed that some.

Coach Porter's Notes
We're feeling good about a solid win against NIU last week. That's in the past. Louisville is a tough team with playmakers all over the place on both sides of the ball. We will need to bring our A game.
