Didn’t think undefeated Miami losing 38-3 to 1-win Cal was a top story?

The Victory Lap: Manu Toomer wins ACC POTW, Coach Mack praises Rodney Cookus and one more for the road

By Anthony Metcalf
Published Oct. 22, 2030, 9:18 a.m., last updated Oct. 22, 2025, 3:03 p.m.
Stanford linebacker Manu Toomer never once considered entering the NFL Draft last spring despite recording 100 tackles, nineteen tackles for loss and three interceptions as an All-ACC selection in his first full-season as a starter and having earned his degree already.
"It was really important for me to come back as a senior, as a captain, and try to bring a championship to Stanford," said Toomer, who splashed onto the scene as a redshirt sophomore under the then new staff after not appearing in a single game in his first two years in Palo Alto.
Toomer's two interception performance against Syracuse helped win him ACC Defensive Player of the Week, his sixth time earning that honor. He's been a standout for the Cardinal with six interceptions in the last two seasons and is once again playing at an elite level that might get him not only All-American consideration but potentially being a day one or day two draft pick.
"Those things take care of themselves," said Toomer, "We're just focused on winning right now and that's where we're all putting our energy towards."
Rodney Cookus comes up with clutch catches as Mack highlights his blocking
After being shutout against Notre Dame last week, Rodney Cookus went into the fourth quarter against Syracuse without a reception or a target. Stanford head coach Bubba Mack went up to the receiver during a timeout and told him to keep doing what he's doing and the ball would find him him.
Cookus would converted two third downs in the third quarter to help open the floodgate against Syracuse and after the game, Mack highlighted Cookus' blocking on the perimeter on Trumaine Lasike's long touchdown run in the third quarter.
"He does a great job of blocking on the outside and really helping our guys capture that sideline," Mack said, "He impacts the game in so many ways that don't show up in the stat sheet."
Mack added that the team needs to do a better job of getting Cookus involved now that he's a focal point for defense. He had back to back 100-yard games against Kennesaw State and SMU and had two touchdowns against Georgia Tech and 78 yards against Louisville but since then, he'd had just three catches for fifteen yards in two games.
The final road trip of the season
Thanks to the genius of ACC scheduling, the Stanford Cardinal haven't had a home game since August 31st. They'll travel to No. 13 Miami this weekend for their final road game of the season. Mack said that the consecutive road trips, including three to the East Coast, has helped bring the team together.
"We knew it was a grind and it's been that but the job's not finished," Mack said of the team's road schedule, "We have one more game and then a bye so we have to stay aggressive, stay focused, keep it tight and keep it pushing."
When the Cardinal land back home from Miami, they'd have flown 28,136 miles this season. By comparison, according to the Action Network, the average FBS team travels roughly 4,423 miles.
Welcome to the ACC.

vs. Florida A&M (FCS): W 49-0
vs. Cincinnati (4-3): W 42-23
at Tulane (2-4): W 23-21
at Louisville (4-2): L 24-18
vs. Virginia (3-3): W 27-11
vs. California (2-6): W 38-3
Team Leaders
Passing: Parker Wylie 67 cmp%, 1909 yards, 21 TD, 2 INT, 163.4 passer rating
Rushing: LaMichael Moffett 646 yards, 4.5 ypc, 6 TD
Receiving: Marco Blades 45 receptions, 690 yards, 11 TD
Defense: Kelvin Byham 30 tackles, 15 TFL, 11.5 sacks
Injuries
EDGE Javon Canady (Junior) Abdominal Tear (Probable)
HB Dennis Brahms (Junior) Dislocated Ankle (Out)
LB Alex Rheem (Senior) Broken Ribs (Out)
G Harvey Way (sSenior) Dislocated Ankle (Out)
Players to Watch
QB Parker Wylie (R-Jr) | 6′1", 202LBS | 85 OVR, 83 SPD, 90 ACC, 96 THP, 90 SAC, 87 MAC, 84 DAC
‣ A twitched up athlete that is starting to put it together, Wylie went through some growing pains last year against Stanford, throwing two interceptions in what was a winnable for the Hurricanes in their loss to the Cardinal. He hasn't thrown an interception since Week 4 against Tulane and is coming off a four touchdown performance against Cal in what was probably the best game of his career. We've seen athletic quarterbacks be able to extend plays against this Stanford defense and Wylie has the arm and legs to make things difficult.
HB LaMichael Moffett (R-Sr) | 5'10", 187LBS | 92 OVR, 89 SPD, 90 ACC, 97 COD, 91 CAR, 87 JKM
‣ Stanford answered the bell against Jaron Dennis last week against Syracuse but Miami is a whole different beast with their offensive line. Moffett missed most of last season with an injury, including the Stanford game, and even his backup Joshua Thomas rushed for seventy six yards on just five carries. Moffett has rushed for at least eighty yards in each game this season and had 105 against Auburn and two touchdowns against Cincinnati.
EDGE Kelvin Byham (R-Sr) | 6′4", 246LBS | 90 OVR, 92 SPD, 95 ACC, 83 PMV, 87 FMV, 85 BSH
‣ Two seasons ago, Byham had the strip sack on Tavien St. Clair to beat Stanford as a redshirt sophomore. Since then, he's put together three straight double-digit sack seasons, including seventeen last year. He has 11.5 this season already and has secured a sack in all but one game this season (Louisville) and will be matched up against Stanford right tackle Jameson Flood whose only surrendered one sack this year.
