That class is setting Hartline up for a great season or epic collapse. He’s a great recruiter but can he handle the defense?
defense is going to be make or break for us- article in coming about it :curtain:

Hopefully Hartline isn't a pump & dumper like Freeman was.

Class is looking buttery
we went up to a 5* prestige now (more on that later) so the only way he would leave is if one of three teams on his list become available.

Secondary the Question Mark As Reyna Learns on the Fly

Image

Conway, SC. - Walt Reyna doesn’t need an introduction in Conway. The Irmo, South Carolina native is Coastal Carolina royalty, a once-in-a-generation defender who burst onto the scene as a true freshman and launched an unprecedented four-year run of Bednarik, Nagurski, and Butkus Awards that shredded the record books and reshaped the program’s identity.

But ask him what he remembers most, and he doesn’t hesitate.

“Hoisting that championship. Bringing it to Conway,” Reyna said. “I could’ve never won another award and still been content. That was special.”

That first title in 2028 was more than a trophy. It was the moment Coastal Carolina stopped being a nice story and started becoming a real force. The momentum carried straight through to ACC admission in 2030 Reyna’s final season as a Chanticleer and the program hasn’t slowed since. Four straight ACC titles. Back-to-back national championships in 2032 and 2033. A new standard cemented.

And now, Reyna is back home, not as the star linebacker who terrorized offenses, but as the defensive coordinator tasked with upholding the legacy he helped build.

“This unit became synonymous with championship defense even after I stopped patrolling the field,” Reyna said after the Teal Showcase scrimmage. “I have an obligation to uphold that standard. It’s not one I take lightly.”

Coastal lost plenty of production this offseason: Carl Urbik jumped to the NFL as a first-round pick; Cordell Marvin transferred to Texas in search of a steadier staff; senior leaders Trevor Bausby, Dexter Bibbs, and Jacques Howe were dismissed following academic violations. But Reyna isn’t blinking.

“We’ve still got Monte [Miner], Russ [Devan], Miles [Clutts], all guys who wreak havoc up front,” he said. “And we’ve got real athletes at linebacker. There’s no shortage of talent.”

The defensive line again projects as a quarterback-mauling unit, and the linebackers remain one of the most athletic groups in the ACC. The concern, and everyone in Conway knows it, is the secondary. With the Chanticleers pivoting back toward an aggressive, man-heavy scheme after Brent Pry’s 4-2-5 system last season, experience on the back end is suddenly in short supply.

“It’s going to look a lot like what we ran when I played,” Reyna explained. “4-3 Multiple, aggressive, adaptable. More size, more speed. But we’re playing a ton of man coverage. Those guys in the back have to hold up, and we’re coaching them hard every day.”

Reyna does have one anchor: returning Jim Thorpe Award winner Channing Armour. But behind him, things get young, fast. Sophomore Desmond Schraeder flashed late last season, especially during the playoff run after Bibbs and Howe were suspended, but he remains raw. Steven Middlebrooks slid over from safety in an effort to stabilize the position group, but his experience at corner is limited.

A source close to the program put it bluntly: “They’re going to have to grow up quick.”

And looming over all of it is the question no one around the program wants to say out loud: What happens if the secondary struggles and how will Reyna respond?

“He’s only been a position coach for one year before this,” the source continued. “Yeah, Tom Allen is there to help ease the learning curve. But at the end of the day, it’s Walt’s show. If things go sideways, no one’s pointing at Tom. They’re going to be asking Walt what the plan is.”

Early indications suggest Reyna will try to ease his young defensive backs into the season, leaning on linebacker and safety help early while the defensive line generates pressure. But anyone who watched Reyna play remembers the hallmark of those units: chaos. Exotic blitzes. Heat from every angle. Controlled violence.

If Reyna taps back into that identity, the back end will have to prove it can survive on an island.

And if not? Well, Coastal’s brand-new Air Raid might find itself in weekly shootouts out of necessity, not design.

Nice pullback bringing a former player in to coach. It will be interesting to see how the secondary holds up early in the year. Especially if you have a marquee matchup early on.

Thanks man, he was hired as the LB coach last year. Despite being a 4x winner, he was a 6th round pick so I planned on giving it a few years then bringing him back. Had a CPU gen DC get hired, so seemed as good a time as any

Sky Is the Limit For Coastal In 2035

Image

Conway, SC. - The message in Conway throughout the spring and summer has been clear: preserve the Coastal tradition built under Kade Vaughn while adding a fresh identity.

"Walt has been great for that and I bounce a lot of ideas off of him," Hartline admitted after a spring practice. "Not how he coached, but how he took the Chanticleers to new heights while maintaining their gritty, underdog roots. It's definitely a balancing act."

"It's just a vibe, a Conway vibe," Reyna said with a smile when asked about Hartline's comments. "Coach got a way to go, but he's on the right track," added the former Chanticleer legend.

Hartline has wasted no time putting his stamp on the program. Alongside new offensive coordinator Connor McQueen, the Chanticleers are taking the high-octane system employed by Vaughn and injecting it with nitro.

"Everything is cranked up a notch," Anthony Prude explained when asked about the changes. "But it's not just tempo. It's concepts, what we're looking to attack, how many variables are built into every play call, the different ways we can exploit defenses."

The biggest X factor in the Chanticleers' newly adopted Air Raid isn't the scheme, it's the maestro calling the shots. Anthony Prude may be the most dynamic athlete to ever orchestrate an Air Raid offense.

"It's amazing to watch," Hartline marveled, with McQueen quickly adding, "You saw Caleb Williams running it and that was special. Ant is 10x the athlete Caleb is, respectfully."

That athleticism is what many believe will elevate the Chanticleers' attack to unprecedented levels.

"Even if you cover every route, every concept, you're going to be out of position because Prude can simply run like a halfback and chew up yardage," one ACC coach observed. "If you leave a defender to spy, someone is going to shake open. If everything executes like it's planned, I don't see who slows them down."

While highlight reels are being prepped for the offense, the narrative surrounding the defense tells a different story.

"Publicly the Chanticleers are saying the right thing," noted the same source. "Tom is the guiding hand for Walt and they have the utmost confidence in Walt to adapt and grow, and I don't doubt that's genuine. But the underlying question no one wants to answer is: what happens if they falter early?"

The Chanticleers are implementing a new defensive scheme for the second consecutive year, though it's closer to Tony White's system than Brent Pry's, and have undergone wholesale changes, particularly in a secondary lacking experience.
Most teams would schedule a cupcake or two to open the season and work out the kinks. But that isn't the Chanticleer way.

"What do you think," Hartline said when asked if Coastal would schedule an FCS program as a warmup. "This is Conway. We don't duck the smoke."

Once again, the Chanticleers face a brutal opening stretch. The season kicks off against defending National Champion Ole Miss in the Camping World Kickoff. ACC play opens immediately with a trip to Duke in Week 2. Road tests at Ohio State and Clemson loom early, alongside home games against both Notre Dame and Georgia.

While players insist Marcus Freeman's return with Georgia is just another game, radio host Chip Hamilton on Chants Up is already prepping the Conway Crazies for a hostile welcome. He's announced that the best sign harassing Freeman will win tickets to the ACC Championship Game.

When reminded that the ACC Championship Game wouldn't be confirmed before Georgia's visit, Hamilton brushed it off completely. "We'll be there, book it."

It's reminiscent of Hamilton's 2027 contest when Dowell Loggains—the main whistleblower in Kade Vaughn's gambling investigation—returned to Conway with Appalachian State. The winning sign then depicted Vaughn smoking a cigar with Loggains' head as the tip.

"Conway can get creative, I'm excited to see what they cook up," Hamilton said with a laugh.

The fact that a home trip from the 5-7 Georgia Bulldogs is more anticipated than a road trip to #4 Ohio State shows the deep running betrayal those in Conway still feel about Freeman's sudden departure. Hartline is thankful for the distraction in what will be his own coming when Coastal invades "The Shoe" in Week 3.

"It's just another game, and I'm sure the coverage will intensity as the game approaches. But by then, we'll be locked and loaded," declared the coach.

With an energetic head coach, an explosive offense built around a dynamic quarterback, and a defense carrying championship expectations, one thing is clear: Coastal Carolina is back like they never left, even with some new wrinkles.
