Bye Week Report: As the SEC falters around them, the Hurricanes continue to separate themselves from the pack
Manny Ledo -- The Miami Herald Sports Columnist

At the time of the schedule reveal, Miami's inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference was nothing short of daunting with three top-25 opponents within the first six games and four consecutive SEC road trips to Arkansas, Texas, Florida and Alabama.

Not only have the Hurricanes survived this gauntlet, they've done so with flying colors, securing the top spot in the latest AP Poll and have also rid themselves of potential competition and roadblocks to the SEC Championship Game -- and by extension the College Football Playoffs -- as the last remaining undefeated team in the SEC. Georgia, Clemson and Ole Miss already have one loss while Alabama suffered its second loss of the year last week, likely taking them out of contention.

If the Hurricanes finish their last portion of the SEC strong, which features primarily home games, they will not only make it to the SEC Championship Game but be in prime position to three-peat once they get into the playoffs.

Team Leaders
Passing: Bernie Flowers (76% completion, 1826 yards, 17 TD, 5 INT, 185.9 QB rating)
Rushing: Aidan Teague (629 yards, 6.2 ypc, 7 TD)
Receiving: Max North (29 receptions, 644 yards, 6 TD)
Defense: CB Manuel Arcuri (31 tackles, 6 INT, 3 PBU)

PFF Offensive Line Grade
LT Darrius Keyes: 7 GP, 7 GS, 62.6 PFF grade
LG Jalen Browning: 6 GP, 6 GS, 58.6 PFF grade
LG Paul Bach: 2 GP, 1 GS, 28.3 PFF grade
C John Armah: 7 GP, 7 GS, 70.6 PFF grade
RG Nate Keke: 6 GP, 4 GS, 82.8 PFF grade
RG Taylor Warmack: 6 GP, 2 GS, 44.8 PFF grade
RT Tobias Salaam: 7 GP, 7 GS, 71.6 PFF grade

Team Rankings
Points Per Game: 37.3 PPG
Total Offense: 495.4 YPG
Rushing Offense: 226.3 YPG
Passing Offense: 269 YPG
Scoring Defense: 21.5 PAPG
Total Defense: 349.7 YAPG
Rushing Defense: 65 YAPG
Passing Defense: 284.7 YAPG
Turnover Differential: +2

Remaining Schedule
at #5 Notre Dame (7-1, 0-0 Big Ten)
vs. #14 Clemson (6-1, 3-1 SEC)
vs. Vanderbilt (3-4, 2-3 SEC)
at Texas A&M (1-6, 0-5 SEC)
vs. Tennessee (4-3, 3-2 SEC)

Midseason Award - Most Valuable Player
The Big Three of Bernie Flowers, Aidan Teague and Max North is mighty formidable with Flowers leading the SEC in passer rating, Teague leading the SEC in rushing and North is fifth in the SEC in receiving yards per game.

The edge, however, goes to Flowers who has been incredibly consistent this season and made timely big throw after big throw when the Hurricanes have been in contested games. Any questions about whether or not Flowers could be a full-time starter has been answered as he's turned down the turnover worthy plays while still being a highlight reel waiting to happen.

Midseason Award - Most Improved Player
Nate Keke entered the season as Miami's backup guard after not having played much in first two seasons with the Hurricanes but by Miami's third game, Keke entered the starting lineup and hasn't left since, grading out as the Hurricanes' top offensive lineman.

The South Florida native has three years of eligibility left which has to be exciting and promising for Canes' fans and the coaching staff.

Midseason Award - Best Freshman
Coming out of camp, it looked like this was going to be Broderick Booker's award to run with after he led the team in carries in the first two games of the season but Booker has taken more of a complimentary role with the rise in touches for both Aidan Teague and Kaseem Dalton, not to mention Javier Torrez.

Edward Verrier, meanwhile, continues to lead the team in tackles and seems poised to be the next great Miami linebacker with nine tackles for loss on the season already.

Hurricanes trending in a positive direction with top quarterback target Alec Baer
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider

It wasn't clear if the Miami Hurricanes were going to go after a quarterback in this cycle as they didn't offer a single 2031 arm during the spring and summer evaluation period. Halfway through the high school and college season, however, they did put out an offer to Georgia's Alec Baer and seem to be trending towards landing an official visit from the Savannah native.

Baer has been Crystal Ball'd to West Virginia for a while, dating back to his junior season when the Mountaineers were one of the first schools to offer him. Georgia, Auburn and Clemson have all shown interest but prior to Miami's offer, West Virginia was his only D-I offer with many viewing his commitment and eventual signing with the Mountaineers as a done deal.

The seventh ranked quarterback this cycle, Baer would be one of the few times that the Hurricanes have gone outside of the state of Florida for a signal caller in recent years with all three of Miami's recent starters -- Emory Williams, Keke Hagg and Bernie Flowers -- hailing from the Sunshine State.
