Georgia Tech informed by Kennesaw State head coach Bubba Mack that he will not be taking the head coaching job
KingHootMan -- KSUOwlHowl.com Football Contributor

In a tweet and delete that was then tweeted again, ESPN's Pete Thamel has reported that Georgia Tech has been formally informed by Kennesaw State head coach Bubba Mack that he will not be accepting their offer to be their next head coach.

Mack has long been rumored and linked to be the Yellow Jacket's next head coach to replace fired head coach Lance Taylor. The Yellow Jackets interview Mack two weeks ago, along with Buffalo's Pete Lembo and South Alabama's Major Applewhite with Mack quickly emerging as the top candidate. Thamel and the Atlanta Journal Constitution had previously reported that Mack had communicated to those within the program that he had intended to take on the head coaching job at Georgia Tech.

It's likely that had the Owls not been in the playoffs that Mack probably would have already agreed and been announced to be the Yellow Jackets but the timing of it all, with the Owls getting ready to play in their first ever playoff game, left the door open for doubt to creep in and it seems that it has.

Kennesaw State's Bubba Mack has been named the new football coach at Stanford, the school announced on Monday.

Mack, who graduated from Oklahoma, has been the coach at Kennesaw State since 2025. The Owls won the Conference USA Championship this season and played Clemson in the first round of the College Football Playoffs before they were bounced out by the Tigers.

"I am excited to be the next head coach at a great and historic program like Stanford," Mack said in a statement. "I truly believe that this fine university has the right infrastructure and the right people to help guide Stanford football into this new age of college football and emerge as a dominant, championship winning football program."

Mack, 54, was a finalist for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award after leading Kennesaw State to a twelve-win season and their first ever conference championship at the FBS level.

"I am excited to welcome Coach Mack and his family to Stanford," director of athletics John Donahoe said in a statement. "Coach Mack is a proven winner who has experienced success at many levels of football. Throughout our visits together he demonstrated an understanding of what makes Stanford special, and a deep desire to capitalize on our unique strengths. He possesses an incredible football mind and has a long history of caring deeply for the student-athletes he leads. I am excited for the next chapter of Cardinal football and eager for our student-athletes to experience Coach Mack's passion, wisdom and leadership."

The Stanford job opened when Jim L. Mora retired following the conclusion of his second season with Stanford. Mack was widely linked to the head coaching job at Georgia Tech but removed himself from consideration on Thursday.

Recruits can’t trust Bubba Mack to honor his word. He’s a lying weasel. Gonna be a struggle to get good kids to that program under him. - father of Kennesaw State quarterback Skyler Williams
