Steelers Select Mizzou G Cayden Green After Some Re-Positioning

Pittsburgh, PA. - With their quarterback situation addressed by acquiring Anthony Richardson Sr., the Pittsburgh Steelers shifted gears in the 2026 NFL Draft, entering the night intent on taking the best player available with the 23rd overall pick. Many expected Pittsburgh to lean into the passing game and target a wide receiver, especially with Arizona State product Jordyn Tyson still on the board.
But the Los Angeles Rams had other ideas. Looking to replace Davante Adams after his retirement, Rams GM Les Snead made an aggressive push to leapfrog Buffalo and Dallas — two teams rumored to be high on Tyson. The Steelers leveraged that urgency into a deal.
Pittsburgh traded down from No. 23 to No. 28, picking up an additional third-round pick in this year’s draft while also agreeing to swap first-round picks with Los Angeles in 2027 — a move that could pay off handsomely given the Rams’ unsettled quarterback situation. As part of the package, the Steelers sent a 2028 third-rounder back to L.A.
At No. 28, Pittsburgh selected guard Cayden Green out of Missouri.
Green, a former five-star recruit, checks in at 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds with prototypical size and power for the interior. After beginning his college career at Oklahoma, he transferred to Missouri and quickly established himself as one of the SEC’s most consistent blockers. His tape shows heavy hands, natural anchor strength, and the ability to displace defenders in the run game.
While not an elite mover in space, Green has enough athleticism to thrive in zone concepts and is considered technically sound in pass protection. He allowed just one sack across his final two college seasons. Coaches rave about his work ethic and toughness, making him a strong candidate to develop into a long-term starter.
For Pittsburgh, the pick fits both short- and long-term needs. With Isaac Seumalo back on only a one-year deal, Green projects as his likely successor in 2027. He joins an already young core up front featuring Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick, and Troy Fautanu — giving the Steelers one of the youngest offensive lines in the league.
