The Last Kingdom: A Wexford FC Story.

On the banks of the River Slaney, where the sea winds roll in across Ferrycarrig Park and the gulls circle above a patchwork of green and gold farmland, a different kind of longship is being built. Not of timber and iron — but of youth, resilience, and belief. Wexford FC, known to their supporters as The Ferrycarrig Vikings, stand at the beginning of a journey that aims to carry the club into the stormy waters of the League of Ireland Premier Division and beyond.

This is not a story of giants. It’s a story of survival, rebirth, and identity.

Wexford FC’s roots run deep through the county’s modern football history. The club evolved from Wexford Youths, a team renowned across Ireland for its dedication to developing young players and giving local talent a pathway into senior football. While trophies were rare and financial stability often fragile, the Youths built something more enduring — a footballing culture grounded in community, hard work, and opportunity. As the club transitioned into Wexford FC, the mission remained the same: represent the county, nurture its players, and prove that the south-east could stand toe-to-toe with Ireland’s traditional football powerhouses.

The Viking identity isn’t just branding — it echoes Wexford’s own past. More than a thousand years ago, Norse settlers arrived along these same coasts, founding trading ports and shaping the region’s maritime culture. Wexford town itself owes part of its history to Viking origins, a legacy of seafaring resilience and frontier spirit. Today’s Vikings don’t arrive in longboats — they step onto muddy pitches, travel long hours on buses, and fight for every point in front of loyal but modest crowds. Yet the symbolism remains: fearless explorers from the edge of the island, determined to carve their place into history.

The 2025 season marks a new chapter. Competing in the League of Ireland First Division, Wexford FC begins a campaign defined by one clear objective — promotion. The squad is young, hungry, and often overlooked. Many players balance football with work or study, and resources remain limited compared to the full-time Premier Division sides waiting above. But there’s a quiet confidence around Ferrycarrig Park. The Vikings are rebuilding, sharpening their axes for a climb that will test every ounce of grit the club possesses.

Every away trip north, every Friday night under the floodlights, every last-ditch tackle and academy debut becomes part of a larger saga — a modern Norse tale played out on Irish grass rather than frozen fjords. Supporters dream of packed stands, top-flight battles, and the day the Vikings ascend to Ireland’s highest level not as visitors, but as contenders.

This is the beginning of that journey.

Kevin Doyle Appointed Wexford FC Director of Football.

Wexford FC are proud to announce that Kevin Doyle has joined the club as Director of Football.

A household name in Irish sport, Doyle enjoyed a remarkable career at the highest levels of the game, representing Ireland 62 times and starring in the Premier League with Wolves and Reading. He requires no introduction to the Wexford public, and his return to support football development in the county is a moment of real significance for the club.

In his new role, Kevin will also join the club’s newly established Technical Board, which will oversee the Academy strategy at Wexford FC.

Our pre-academy age groups (U13 and younger) are an area of major focus for the club. Children will continue training and playing with their local clubs while accessing high-quality coaching and development opportunities through Wexford FC. This blended model is designed to strengthen football across the county, ensuring young players can develop at home while staying connected to their grassroots communities.

Speaking about his appointment, Kevin said:
“I’m delighted to be joining Wexford FC in this role. I’ve been really impressed with the level of coaching and the ambitions within the club, especially at the younger age groups. There’s always been a huge amount of talent in Wexford, and I hope I can help contribute to an environment where young players have a great opportunity to develop.”
County Wexford is one of the largest and most passionate footballing communities in the country. Above all else, our aim is to create meaningful opportunities for young players to grow, learn, and thrive right here at home. Kevin’s involvement is a major step forward in that mission.

Wexford FC look forward to working closely with Kevin and to seeing the impact of this partnership across our club and the wider football community.

Wexford FC Announces Stephen Elliott as New Men’s First Team Manager

Wexford FC is delighted to announce the appointment of former Republic of Ireland international, Stephen Elliott, as the new First Team Manager. Elliott, who brings a wealth of experience from his playing career and coaching roles, will take charge ahead of the upcoming season.

Elliott, capped 9 times for Ireland, enjoyed a distinguished playing career with clubs including Manchester City, Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Following his retirement from professional football, he transitioned into coaching, making a significant impact in various roles including St Patrick’s Athletic where he was most recently Head of Academy Football.

A strong advocate for youth development, Elliott has an exceptional track record of identifying and nurturing young talent. During his time at St. Patrick’s Athletic, he played a pivotal role in guiding academy players to first-team success, emphasizing skill development, tactical understanding, and professionalism. Wexford FC is excited to see his dedication to developing young players contribute to the growth of the club’s own rising stars.

Speaking on his appointment, Stephen Elliott set out his vision for the future at Wexford FC:
“First and foremost I am extremely grateful to all involved at the football club to be given the opportunity to be a first team manager for the first time.

I am proud and privileged to have the opportunity to lead and represent Wexford FC as manager going forward.

A big part of the future of this football club lies in the energy, hunger, and talent of our young players.

Working with a young squad excites me because it’s not just about developing individuals but building a legacy that runs from the academy to the first team.

I want to create an environment where senior players set the tone, leading by example, and young players know what is required at first team level.

We want academy players here to know they have a real pathway to success at Wexford FC.

Together, we aim to create a culture of opportunity, hard work, and belief—which will be engraved in the very fabric of the club.”
Wexford FC Director of Football Kevin Doyle welcomed Elliott’s arrival, stating:

“As Head of Football Operations I am delighted to welcome Stephen Elliott as our new senior men’s team head coach! Stephen has had an illustrious playing career professionally at club and country level and has played with me and with some great football people , more importantly he has served his time learning and working on his coaching and managerial career since hanging up his boots. It’s exciting times ahead and we are all looking forward to supporting Stephen in his new opportunity at Wexford FC. We would also like to thank all the candidates who applied for the role and the selection panel for their professionalism in the process.”

Stephen will begin his tenure immediately, focusing on preseason preparations and squad development. Fans are invited to meet Stephen at the upcoming Wexford FC Fan Forum on Sunday 1st December at 2.00pm at Ferrycarrig Park.

Wexford FC looks forward to an exciting new chapter under Stephen Elliott’s leadership!
